  In Poll of Favorite Sports, MMA Is Overlooked 

  by Michael David SmithThe polling firm Harris Interactive regularly surveys Americans to find out their favorite sports, and the results of this year’s poll are in. Check out the results and you’ll see about what you’d expect: Pro football is clearly America’s most popular sport, baseball is next, then college football, auto racing, basketball and hockey.

  What you won’t see anywhere is mixed martial arts.

  The reason? MMA wasn’t even one of the choices Harris Interactive gave to poll respondents.

  Watch Jens Pulver win his first fight since 2007 

  Jens Pulver once was the UFC lightweight champion, but his last win was in 2007 against Cub Swanson in the WEC. Since then, he has lost six times, including two losses to Urijah Faber. He righted the ship on Saturday night at XFO 38 outside Chicago, winning by rear naked choke over Mike Lindquist. The fight starts at about two minutes in.

  Lindquist was on a losing streak of his own, with the Pulver fight his fifth loss in a row.

  Rashad Evans turns to The Force to train for his bout with ‘Shogun’ 

  Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has plenty of weapons to use against Rashad Evans, so "Suga" had to get creative when training for their March title bout. He had to turn to Jedi powers.

  With his own Yoda, Greg Jackson, looking on, the padawan hones his mind-control skills. Jedi Knight will pay off, as the ability to sense danger, control minds and drain life force could come in handy against Shogun. Now, if only light sabers were allowed in the Octagon…

  Taking your MMA career seriously: 52-year-old Severn wins, Sylvia loses 

  The UFC is always looking for more depth in its heavyweight ranks, while Strikeforce recently unveiled an eight-man heavyweight Grand Prix.

  Neither promotion had an interest in a former UFC heavyweight champ who’s just 34 years old. Tim Sylvia is on the outside looking in. After watching his fight over the weekend, is there any wondering why? 

  Sylvia, who weighed in at 311 pounds wearing a shirt and jeans, suffered another knockout defeat in less than one minute.

  Abe Wagner unleashed a flurry on the former UFC belt holder, and the big man couldn’t recover (2:07 mark).

  Wagner, a first-round loser on Season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter," got the win in just 32 seconds. Sylvia’s lack of conditioning is killing his career.

  If Sylvia (28-7, 10-4 UFC) wants an example of professionalism, he needs to look no further than Dan Severn. Another former UFC heavyweight champ, Severn is still fighting. The 52-year-old is certainly not facing the competition Sylvia is, but at least he’s keeping himself in solid shape and ensuring that he’s dangerous enough to compete.

  Severn, the UFC champ in 1995 and 1996, picked up career win No. 97 against Scott Fraser at an MMA card in Canada. Severn weighed in at 254.

  The loss actually snapped a four-fight win streak for Sylvia. He’s now just 4-3 since leaving the UFC in 2008. All three of the losses have come inside of 36 seconds (Ray Mercer, Fedor Emelianenko and Wagner).

  Brock Lesnar talks Coaching on The Ultimate Fighter 13 – Brock Lesnar 

  Brock Lesnar said his decision to coach on “The Ultimate Fighter” came down to two things – money and a shot at getting betting the HWT title. He also fired back at folks saying he’s not qualified to be a coach.

  Fedor Emelianenko training on a horse for Feb. 12 bout 

  

  Oh, why hello, there. I am Fedor Emelianenko, the greatest fighter in the world. It’s so nice to meet you. Wait, what did you just say? Fabricio Wer-who?

  

  That’s funny. You … you, my friend, are funny. I did lose to Werdum. It is true. But did you hear about the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix?

  

  I was stopped dead in my tracks when I heard about. The chance to fight Fabricio again? Or Alistair Overeem? Yes, that made me think.

  

  I have to win that grand prix.

  

  I’m going to show who the best heavyweight in the world is, even if it means I have to spar in a Stalin-era pool hall. (No, wait. Why am I here? I’m the greatest fighter in the world, and I’m training at a place where any Sergei Schmo can come in off the street to play nine-ball?)

  I’ll do it for you, my friend. I’ll do it for you, and of course, to impress the ladies.

  Nice guys finish fights: Marquardt, sick kids, Lawlor and troops 

  Fighters may spend their days punching people in the face and trying to rip limbs off of their opponents, but that doesn’t mean they’re not nice people. Plenty of fighters give their time to charity without hope of publicity or adulation. Here, we aim to give them both publicity and adulation.

  First up: hanging out with sick kids:

  

  Nate Marquardt and his team from Grudge Training Center took a break from training for Yoshihiro Akiyama to visit the Children’s Hospital in Colorado.

  Next up, Tom Lawlor and the troops:

  

  Tom Lawlor led a delegation that included Seth Petruzelli and Nate Quarry to visit and train with troops stationed around the Pacific.

  Fedor goes the Mayweather route, wants strict drug testing for Strikeforce GP 

  Floyd Mayweather made headlines in 2010 by insisting on Olympic-style drug testing for all his opponents. Shane Mosley agreed to the terms. Manny Pacquiao still hasn’t. The boxer wants to ensure a level playing field. M-1 Global, the management team for MMA star Fedor Emelianenko, never used the term "Olympic-style," but it sure sent a similar message during a press conference today in Moscow.

  "Two out of eight fighters in the (Strikeforce heavyweight) tournament previously failed a drug test. Obviously, I’m talking about Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva," said Fedor’s manager Vadim Finkelchtein.

  "We want fair competition for everyone, so that’s why I will ask the commission to perform a strict drug testing. Fedor is not using any kind of substance to enhance his performance, and will be ready for any kind of testing. So if the commission decides to follow our suggestion, we’ll be ready."

  Fedor often refers to Barnett as a good friend, but it’s clear there’s still some lingering resentment from the American’s last positive drug test. 

  "We have never shied away from a particular battle, I just want for his fighter to be professional opponent, not a chemist. Today doping can significantly add speed and endurance. We just want all parties to the Grand Prix and potential rivals to play by the rules," Finkelchtein said. "Our organization paid a heavy price after the cancelation of the fight between Josh Barnett and Fedor. We did a lot of promotion for this fight, which in the end did not take place. That’s why as a promoter and manager, I don’t want this to happen ever again."

  Barnett is on the other side of the bracket in Strikeforce’s heavyweight Grand Prix. The only way the fighters could meet is in the finals tentatively scheduled for late 2011. It’s still not a certainty Barnett is a lock for the tourney. He appeal and re-instatment process in California has dragged on for months. The fighter is now planning on skipping the next hearing in the Golden State. The California State Athletic Commission is planning on ruling on Barnett’s license either way. 

  During the presser, M-1 management also talked about Fedor’s new three-fight deal which is more of a three-way pact with M-1, Strikeforce and Showtime. Last time around it was just M-1 and Strikeforce. Finkelchtein hopes to announce a Showtime deal to televise four or five M-1 fight cards in the next month.
